Algiers Decries Paris’s Violation of International Legitimacy, Accusing France of Complicity in Morocco’s Colonial Agenda

Algiers, Algeria | February 18th, 2025 — Algeria has vehemently denounced the visit of a French government official to Western Sahara, describing the move as an act of “particular gravity” that blatantly disregards international legality. In a strongly worded statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Algiers accused France—a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council—of undermining the decolonization process and endorsing Morocco’s illegal occupation of the territory.

A Defiance of International Law

“The visit of a French government official to Western Sahara is of particular gravity. It is condemnable on multiple levels,” the Algerian Foreign Ministry declared. “This action reflects an extraordinary disregard for international legality from a country that holds a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.”

The statement further underscored that such an initiative directly aids Morocco’s efforts to impose a fait accompli in Western Sahara, a territory whose decolonization remains incomplete and where the right to self-determination has yet to be realized.

Algeria did not mince words in its condemnation of France’s stance, arguing that the visit reinforces perceptions of an enduring colonial mindset. “This unwarranted visit by a French government official projects the deplorable image of a former colonial power standing in solidarity with a new one,” the ministry asserted.

The Algerian government also lambasted France’s diplomatic posture, contending that it further isolates Paris from the broader international community, particularly the United Nations, which has been striving to facilitate a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict based on strict adherence to international law.
