Algeria condemns, in strongest terms, terrorist attack in Burkina Faso

ALGIERS– Algeria strongly condemned the terrorist attack perpetrated in the province of Oudalan in northern Burkina Faso, causing several casualties among the Burkinabe armed forces, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad in a press release, made public this Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

In this painful circumstance, “Algeria presents its sincere condolences and compassion to this brotherly country and to the families of the victims, while affirming its solidarity with Burkina Faso and all the African countries facing the challenges of terrorism,” read the communiqué.

“Based on the recommendations of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to the 36th Summit of the African Union, in his capacity as coordinator of the efforts of the continent for the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, Algeria renews its call to redouble and coordinate efforts at the regional and international levels to eradicate this scourge and deal with its repercussions within the framework of a global and multidimensional approach”, added the same source.

“It also stresses the need to strengthen the defense capacities of African countries to limit the spread of the terrorist threat which threatens stability and hinders development efforts,” the statement concluded.

A military patrol was the target of a terrorist attack in northern Burkina Faso. At least 51 soldiers passed away in this ambush. Noting that attacks by terrorist armed groups have intensified since the beginning of the year.
