Algiers- Algeria, May 10, 2024 – On Wednesday, the parliamentary friendship group between Algeria and Congo convened for a productive meeting under the leadership of Mr. Baghdad Benamara, who presides over the group. Joining them was Mr. Pierre Obambi, head of the Congo-Algeria parliamentary friendship group. Mr. Obambi’s presence in Algiers marked the beginning of an official five-day visit, accompanied by a delegation from the National Assembly of the Republic of Congo. Notably, the delegation was led by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Isidore Mvouba. This significant diplomatic encounter was disclosed through a statement issued by the People’s National Assembly (APN).
At the beginning of the session, the two parties discussed “the historical relations between the two friendly countries, stemming from their common struggle against colonial forces, in anticipation of consolidating mutual cooperation, particularly after the signing of 17 agreements and memoranda of understanding in several areas at the level of the joint commissions of the two countries,” the statement said.
In the framework of parliamentary diplomacy, the two parties agreed to “revitalize the friendship groups and to make them a link between the political formations of the two parliaments, in addition to aligning views and coordinating at the level of regional and international parliamentary bodies, notably the Pan-African Parliament (PAP).”
The two parties also emphasized “the need to strengthen economic and commercial exchanges and to create bridges between chambers of commerce and businessmen from both countries, in addition to cooperation in other areas such as industry, higher education and training, energy, and agriculture,” which requires “a solution to the visa problem and the opening of air routes between the two countries.”
The meeting was attended by the President of the Commission on Economic Affairs, Development, Trade, and Planning, Toufik Guerrache, and the rapporteur of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and the Community, Merouane Arfis.
