Algeria Crushes Morocco’s Desperate Maneuvers as Haddadi Secures AU Leadership

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers, Algeria | February 15th, 2025 — As the African Union renews the administrative bodies of its Commission during its 38th summit, Algeria has achieved a resounding diplomatic victory. Salima Malika Haddadi, Algeria’s Ambassador to Addis Ababa and Permanent Representative to the African Union, has been officially elected as Vice President of this strategic institution, solidifying Algeria’s leadership on the continental stage.

Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf had launched Haddadi’s electoral campaign on December 17, 2024, from Addis Ababa, emphasizing her extensive diplomatic experience and unwavering commitment to peace and unity across Africa. With over two decades of expertise in fostering African solidarity and sustainable development, Haddadi’s election reflects the continent’s confidence in her ability to uphold Africa’s aspirations for stability, integration, and progress.

Haddadi’s career has been a testament to her diplomatic prowess and her dedication to African values—principles deeply rooted in Algeria’s revolutionary history. Throughout her tenure, she has engaged in complex negotiations with member states, regional organizations, and international partners, proving her ability to build consensus, encourage innovation, and achieve tangible results within multicultural and multilingual environments. Fluent in the African Union’s three principal languages—Arabic, English, and French—she has consistently represented Algeria and Africa at the highest levels of diplomatic engagement.

Her role in mediation and conflict resolution—recognized both within the African Union and in the Arab sphere through the Network of Arab Women Mediators—highlights her expertise in bridging the crucial intersection between peace, security, development, human rights, and good governance. As Algeria’s permanent representative to the AU and the Economic Commission for Africa, Haddadi has played a pivotal role in advancing the AU’s objectives, reinforcing intercontinental dialogue, and strengthening the organization’s influence on the global stage.

Meanwhile, Morocco has suffered yet another humiliating diplomatic defeat. Rabat’s bid for a seat on the African Union’s Peace and Security Council was decisively rejected, with Algeria securing an overwhelming 30 votes in the sixth round of voting, while Morocco managed only 17—many of which were obtained through underhanded means. The corridors of the AU are now abuzz with discussions about Morocco’s corrupt practices, as an increasing number of representatives openly express their disdain for Rabat’s blatant attempts to buy influence.

Unlike other member states that uphold diplomatic integrity and advocate for genuine causes, Morocco’s foreign policy has deteriorated into a desperate campaign to undermine Algeria’s initiatives and sabotage its growing influence in Africa. Rather than presenting a compelling vision for the continent’s future, Rabat has focused solely on obstructing Algeria’s diplomatic advancements—an objective that has consistently ended in failure.

The overwhelming rejection of Morocco’s candidacy for the Peace and Security Council underscores Africa’s waning patience with Rabat’s political maneuvering. The cracks within Morocco’s circle of allies are widening, with growing numbers of nations distancing themselves from its questionable agenda. As the AU solidifies its stance against corruption and political manipulation, Morocco finds itself increasingly isolated and sidelined.

Algeria’s decisive victory marks a turning point in continental diplomacy, reaffirming Africa’s commitment to unity, transparency, and true leadership. With Haddadi now at the helm as Vice President of the Peace and Security Council, Algeria’s influence within the AU is set to strengthen further, guiding Africa toward a future built on integrity, sovereignty, and collective progress.
