Algeria Defends Multilateralism, International Law Amid Growing Global Uncertainty

Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf Calls for Strengthening the UN and Upholding Justice at the G20 Ministerial Meeting

Algiers, Algeria | February 21st, 2025 — Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to international law, multilateralism, and the United Nations, with Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf declaring them as “the most precious achievements of humanity” over the past eight decades. Speaking on Thursday in Johannesburg during the G20 Ministerial Meeting, Attaf warned against mounting threats to the global order and urged world powers to recommit to the principles that have safeguarded international stability for generations.

A Warning Against Global Instability and Disregard for International Law

In his address during the second session of the ministerial meeting, which focused on the current geopolitical landscape, Attaf underscored that these hard-won achievements represent the pillars of civilization that have triumphed over chaos, lawlessness, and anarchy. He cautioned that any attempt to undermine these principles constitutes one of the most dangerous gambles against the collective interests of humanity.

“Allowing efforts to erode this legacy—the most sacred and significant to humanity as a whole—is, in our view, a catastrophic miscalculation,” Attaf stated, emphasizing the urgent need for renewed global commitment to these principles.

Amid rising global turbulence, Attaf praised South Africa’s leadership in steering the G20 through an era of uncertainty. “The world is facing mounting crises that demand competent leadership, and we firmly believe that South Africa fully embodies this responsibility, playing a decisive role in addressing today’s escalating challenges.”

Global Injustice and the Rise of Power Politics

As the world approaches the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Attaf expressed deep concern over alarming trends that threaten to unravel the very foundation of the international system.

“In today’s world, we are gravely troubled by the escalating disregard for international law—even its outright violation—particularly in the relations between major powers and vulnerable nations,” he remarked.

The Algerian foreign minister denounced the growing reliance on brute force over legal frameworks, citing Palestine, Western Sahara, and various African regions as tragic examples of ongoing flagrant injustice. He warned against the marginalization of multilateral institutions, particularly the UN, stressing that the international system’s erosion would leave the world vulnerable to lawlessness and disorder.

Attaf issued a direct appeal to the G20 to take an active role in restoring faith in international law, urging the group to revitalize multilateralism and reinforce the UN’s essential role in global governance.

“At a time when the international system faces existential threats, the G20 must serve as a driving force in reviving international law, ensuring that global governance is guided by justice—not by the imposition of force.”

Algeria’s firm stance at the G20 ministerial meeting highlights its determination to defend a world order based on legality, fairness, and multilateral cooperation, resisting the increasing attempts to weaken institutions meant to uphold international peace and stability.
