Algiers, Algeria | May 24, 2024 — The 10th World Water Forum wrapped up, on Friday, in the coastal city of Bali, Indonesia, after five days of intensive discussions. Algeria distinguished itself during the forum with its clear positions, reaffirming the right to access water and the principle of state sovereignty over groundwater, while also addressing the pressing issue of climate change that will continue to affect future generations.

The forum, the largest global gathering on water-related issues, brought together heads of state and government, ministers, industry stakeholders, experts, and civil society representatives from over 170 countries to discuss topics related to the management of this vital resource and to find sustainable solutions to numerous challenges, including sanitation and environmental preservation.

Under the theme “Water for Shared Prosperity,” Algeria, represented by a significant delegation spanning various sectors and led by Minister of Hydraulics, Mr. Taha Derbal, reiterated its position on water-related matters, foremost among them ensuring access to this resource for all its citizens.

During his interventions at the forum, Mr. Derbal emphasized that “with the onset of climate change, the issue of water is increasingly being raised on the international stage,” a situation to which Algeria has responded by turning to unconventional water resources.

In this regard, he cited seawater desalination as an area where Algeria is experiencing a new dynamic, in line with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, by deploying significant resources to address water stress.

Regarding transboundary groundwater issues during his meeting with Loïc Fauchan, President of the World Water Council, the forum’s organizer, Mr. Derbal stressed Algeria’s commitment to the principle of state sovereignty over groundwater.

In this context, he recalled Algeria’s efforts in the signing of the tripartite agreement with Tunisia and Libya for the management of shared groundwater resources among these three countries.

On the climate front, the minister highlighted, during his interventions and discussions with counterparts and participating delegations, the importance of preserving the environment and ecosystems in all water-related projects.

He raised the case of the Saoura region, located in the southwest of the country, which is experiencing drying due mainly to overexploitation of water caused by projects undertaken at the border by a neighboring country.

Active Participation of Algerian Youth

As part of the Algerian delegation at the Bali forum, young members of the Higher Youth Council (HYC) made a noticeable contribution by actively participating in various sessions and panel discussions they attended.

They discussed the lack of water resources caused by climate change and ways to address it, highlighting Algeria’s strategy in this regard and projects initiated by the country’s authorities to tackle water stress.

They particularly raised awareness among young people worldwide about climate issues and the preservation of threatened fragile environments and ecosystems.

The forum also provided an opportunity for HYC members to remind the world of the suffering endured by the Palestinian people, victims of genocidal war waged by Zionist occupation, causing a severe humanitarian crisis with a serious lack of food, water, and sanitation.
