Algeria, DR Congo Seek to Revitalize Strategic Bilateral Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria | January 16th, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic move aimed at deepening bilateral relations, Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through the reactivation of the High Joint Cooperation Commission. This initiative was emphasized by Abdelhak Saihi, Algerian Minister of Health and Special Envoy of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, during an official meeting with President Félix Tshisekedi in Kinshasa.

Saihi, speaking from the African Union City following the high-profile audience, underscored the strategic importance of revitalizing the High Joint Cooperation Commission as a platform for structured collaboration between the two nations. He highlighted that the DRC remains a key partner for Algeria, particularly in vital sectors such as energy, water resources, and infrastructure development, emphasizing the need to leverage the combined expertise of both countries for mutual benefit.

“The Democratic Republic of Congo holds strategic significance for Algeria across various development axes, notably in energy and water resources management, while broader opportunities for cooperation exist in sectors where our shared expertise can be optimized in the service of common interests,” Saihi stated.

Addressing the ongoing security challenges in eastern DRC, Saihi reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering stance in support of just causes and its historical commitment to peace and stability across the African continent. He reiterated Algeria’s diplomatic principles centered on conflict resolution, non-interference, and the promotion of sustainable peace.

This diplomatic engagement reflects Algeria’s broader vision of strengthening South-South cooperation, reinforcing solidarity among African nations, and expanding regional partnerships through proactive diplomacy and shared development goals. The reactivation of the commission is expected to pave the way for enhanced bilateral agreements, technical cooperation, and joint ventures that align with the strategic interests of both countries.
