Algiers, Algeria | June 7th, 2024 — Algeria has been unanimously elected as the vice-president of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for the country.
Represented by its permanent representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, Algeria will serve as the representative of the African Group, collaborating closely with counterparts from other regional groups in the capacity of vice-president.
In this role, Algeria will wield influence in guiding and overseeing the proceedings of the plenary sessions of the UN General Assembly throughout the duration of the 79th session, from September 2024 to September 2025.
The upcoming session of the UN General Assembly is slated to host major events, including the “Summit of the Future,” a high-level segment scheduled for September 2024.
Algeria’s election to this position comes against the backdrop of significant challenges facing Africa, including the completion of decolonization, poverty alleviation, sustainable development promotion, and ensuring food security.
Under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algerian diplomacy is poised to actively engage in multilateral endeavors aimed at addressing these pressing challenges and advocating for sustainable and equitable solutions on the global stage.
Algeria’s diplomatic engagement at the General Assembly will complement its ongoing efforts as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the period 2024-2025.
This dual representation underscores Algeria’s growing prominence and steadfast dedication to advancing international peace and security, further solidifying its position as a key player on the global diplomatic arena.
