ALGIERS- Algeria assumes its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on this Monday, following its election in June 2023 with an overwhelming 95% of the votes, totaling 184 out of 193. The UNSC, one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, will be a pivotal arena for Algeria until 2025.

This election bestows upon Algeria a significant responsibility—to actively contribute to international decision-making processes aimed at enhancing global peace and security. The nation aims to play a “responsible role” during its term, participating in international efforts to address global challenges that pose threats to peace and security.

Taking on this mandate amid geopolitical shifts and the ongoing demand from the African continent for UNSC reform, Algeria pledges to prioritize multilateralism and uphold international law, particularly the right to self-determination.

In a dynamic global landscape, Algeria commits to working towards reinforcing the influence of the African continent in decision-making processes, drawing inspiration from common positions rooted in the principles and ideals enshrined in the African Union’s founding charter. This commitment was highlighted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, during his inaugural speech at the 10th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa held in Oran last December.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, addressing the 5th Summit of the Group of Ten of the African Union (AU) focused on UNSC reform, emphasized the unprecedented succession of crises and conflicts globally, urging the international community to address the reform of the UN Security Council with the utmost urgency. He called for rectifying historical injustices done to the African continent.

Acting as a key player in addressing various peace and security-related issues, from counterterrorism efforts to crisis and conflict resolution, Algeria aims to continue these endeavors during its term and emerge as a vocal advocate for overlooked causes. The Algerian delegation at the UNSC plans to champion the Palestinian cause, including its full UN membership, resolve the Western Sahara conflict in line with UN resolutions, and address conflicts in the Sahel region, now a global epicenter for terrorism and transnational organized crime.

Algeria, acknowledging its role as a major actor in peace and security matters, pledges to strongly advocate for moving beyond the status quo, addressing the root causes of conflicts and crises, paying more attention to the role of women in peace processes, and addressing the plight of children in armed conflicts. The nation seeks to propose a new model of peace operations more suited to contemporary contexts.

As Algeria assumes this vital role in the UNSC, it positions itself as a committed advocate for a more secure and peaceful world, addressing pressing global issues with determination and diplomatic acumen.
