Algeria Embraces Digital Transformation in Fisheries Sector to Boost Efficiency, Public Services

Algiers, Algeria | October 8th, 2024 — In a strategic move to modernize its fisheries sector, Algeria is set to undergo a comprehensive digital transformation aimed at improving both the efficiency of operations and public services. Minister of Fisheries and Fishery Products, Ahmed Badani, announced, today, during a national conference on the digitization of fisheries and aquaculture, the launch of several innovative digital platforms designed to address the concerns of industry professionals and elevate the overall service delivery in the sector.

Minister Badani emphasized that the digital transition in the fisheries sector is a critical component for streamlining administrative processes and enhancing sectoral performance. This initiative is expected to play a pivotal role in stimulating investment and bolstering food security in the country. He outlined several key platforms that have been rolled out to this end, including an incentive platform for tilapia fish producers to improve production and quality, as well as a platform for issuing licenses to import engines less than five years old, aimed at modernizing the fishing fleet.

Moreover, the launch of a professional training registration platform for fisheries and aquaculture, alongside the “Bahar” mobile application, was highlighted. The latter allows professionals in the sector to register with regional and joint chambers, facilitating easier access to essential services and networking opportunities.

Badani further revealed that additional applications are under development, including an advanced statistical system and a remote vessel monitoring system, both of which are designed to enhance the sustainability of marine resources and contribute to the long-term preservation of Algeria’s rich biodiversity.

The conference also featured the signing of a significant cooperation agreement between the startup “Martis” and the business incubator “Iamel,” aimed at exchanging expertise and promoting the startup’s products via the newly established digital platform. This partnership underscores the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the fisheries sector.

Additionally, the minister announced the financing of ten new micro-projects in aquaculture, developed in accordance with Islamic financing principles. These projects are expected to further support the sector’s growth and sustainability.

These developments mark a substantial leap forward in Algeria’s efforts to enhance sustainability and operational effectiveness in a sector that plays a crucial role in ensuring national food security and driving economic growth. The government’s push towards digitization in the fisheries industry is seen as a strategic effort to position Algeria as a leader in modern, sustainable fisheries management in the region.
