Algiers, Algeria | December 11th, 2024 — In a significant achievement for Algeria’s energy sector, the country topped the list of natural gas exporters to Spain in November 2024, accounting for nearly 50% of Spain’s total natural gas imports. This accomplishment underscores Algeria’s growing role as a key player in the European energy market.
According to official data released by Spain’s state-owned gas company “Enagás,” Algeria’s natural gas exports reached a total of 13.694 gigawatt-hours (GWh) for the month of November. Of this, 9.971 GWh were delivered via the “Medgaz” pipeline, while the remaining 3.723 GWh were supplied in liquefied natural gas (LNG) form. This volume represents a remarkable share of Spain’s gas consumption, surpassing both the United States and Russia as primary suppliers to the Spanish market.
In comparison, Russia’s share of gas exports to Spain stood at 21.5%, while the United States contributed 10.9%. This shift in the energy supply landscape signals Algeria’s increasing prominence, fueled by strategic investments in infrastructure and its ongoing role as a reliable energy partner for Europe.
Algeria’s success is not just a testament to its growing energy exports, but also to its strong geopolitical position in the region. The Medgaz pipeline, which plays a critical role in this development, provides a direct and efficient route for Algeria’s natural gas to reach Spain, bypassing transit challenges and bolstering Algeria’s status as a preferred energy supplier.
