Algiers, Algeria | August 29th, 2024 — In a groundbreaking achievement for its agricultural sector, Algeria has ascended to the ranks of the world’s top 10 olive oil producers for the 2023/2024 season. According to a recent report by Best Diplomats, a United Nations-affiliated organization based in New York, Algeria now holds the position of the ninth largest olive oil producer globally, with a notable production volume of 93,000 tons.

The report emphasizes Algeria’s rich tradition of olive cultivation, underpinned by its favorable climatic conditions—mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers—which are ideal for olive growth. Major olive-growing regions in Algeria include Kabylie, the Aurès Mountains, coastal plateaus, and high plateaus, all contributing to the country’s burgeoning reputation in the olive oil industry.

Algerian olive oil is renowned for its distinctive and diverse flavors, often characterized by fruity and subtly spicy notes. The country’s olive orchards blend traditional and modern agricultural practices, producing a wide array of olive oils, from extra virgin to refined varieties, catering to a broad spectrum of palates.

In 2024, Algerian olive oil has made a notable impact on the international stage, amassing around 60 medals in various competitions, including gold, silver, and bronze awards. Esteemed brands such as Arba Olive, Dahbia, Baghlia, and Ithri Olive have received widespread acclaim. The recent Carthage International Olive Oil Competitions in Tunisia highlighted Algerian excellence, with Algerian producers securing a total of 13 medals, including eight gold.

Globally, Spain maintains its position as the leading olive oil producer, with a staggering 766,400 tons produced during the 2023/2024 season, with Andalucía contributing over 75% of this output. Italy follows as the second-largest producer with 288,900 tons, concentrated in regions like Puglia, Calabria, and Sicily. Turkey ranks third with 210,000 tons, predominantly from the Aegean region, while Tunisia is fourth with 200,000 tons, primarily from central and southern areas, such as Sahel and Sfax.

Greece is the fifth-largest producer, yielding 195,000 tons, with production centered in regions, such as the Peloponnese, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. Portugal, the sixth-largest producer, contributes 150,000 tons from the Alentejo region. Morocco, ranking seventh, produces 106,000 tons from northern and central areas, including Fes, Marrakech, and Meknes. Syria, in eighth place, produces 95,000 tons from northwest regions like Aleppo, Latakia, and Idlib.

Egypt completes the top 10 with a production of 40,000 tons, with cultivation flourishing in the temperate climates of the Sinai Peninsula, the Nile Delta, and the Western Desert.

Algeria’s rise to prominence as a top global olive oil producer not only reflects its rich agricultural heritage but also underscores its growing influence and recognition in the international market.
