Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — On Monday, a pivotal development in Algeria’s infrastructure landscape was marked by the official establishment of a new public rail construction group. This entity, launched to oversee and manage key national rail projects, reflects President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic vision for advancing the country’s rail network, as detailed in a statement from the Ministry of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure.
The formal creation of the group was overseen by Lakhdar Rekhroukh, Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, at a ceremony held at the ministry’s headquarters. The inaugural meeting of the general assembly brought together representatives from various government sectors, including the Ministries of Finance, Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, and Transport, according to the communiqué reported by APS.
This new public rail construction group is designed to align with President Tebboune’s broader economic strategy, focusing on restructuring and enhancing the public sector’s capabilities in rail infrastructure development. The group’s mandate includes the management of large-scale rail projects, the fortification of the national rail network, and the mobilization of essential resources. It will also leverage the expertise of public enterprises specializing in engineering to ensure the effective execution of projects.
Minister Rekhroukh highlighted the importance of this new organizational model, which aims to boost national expertise and foster technological independence in rail infrastructure. The group is expected to play a significant role in strengthening the capabilities of domestic companies, enhancing their competitiveness at both national and regional levels, and potentially opening doors for international projects.
