ALGIERS, ALGERIA | May 26, 2024 — The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, highlighted on Sunday the remarkable economic resurgence in Algeria, driven by the encouragement of both public and private investments. In his address during the presentation of the Sonelgaz group’s annual report, Arkab emphasized the efforts of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to boost the energy sector.
Arkab reiterated that President Tebboune’s program prioritizes meeting the fundamental needs of the population and the national economy in the energy sector. This initiative aims to provide a high quality of life for citizens by ensuring access to energy, even in remote areas, and fulfilling the energy needs of various economic sectors. Arkab announced a 99% electricity coverage rate, with over 11.87 million customers, and a 69% gas connection rate, serving 7.7 million customers. He attributed these achievements to state-supported programs worth 450 billion dinars, which have connected 2.4 million households to gas and 450,000 to electricity in recent years. By 2025, an additional 340,000 households are expected to be connected to electricity and 140,000 to gas, requiring 140 billion dinars in public investments.
The minister also outlined the infrastructure enhancement program for 2020-2024, which includes the installation of an additional 4,200 megawatts (MW) of power (16% of the total capacity), 4,115 km of new electricity transmission lines, and 44,000 km of electricity distribution networks. This is complemented by 2,192 km of gas transmission networks and 43,500 km of gas distribution networks, representing 27% of the total network. “These are exceptional achievements,” Arkab stated.
“These efforts have enabled us to support economic development by connecting 64,268 agricultural zones to electricity, with 12,375 more agricultural zones in the pipeline, and 38 industrial zones and 19 activity zones already connected to electricity. Regarding gas, 19 industrial zones and 40 activity zones have been connected,” he noted. Arkab praised those involved in the “Shadow Zones” program, which has connected 95,000 households to electricity and 331,212 to gas since its launch in 2020. Additionally, to ensure citizen safety, “5.6 million carbon monoxide detectors have been installed in homes, with a total of 22 million planned.”
Arkab also highlighted the nation’s efforts towards energy transition. A 15,000 MW renewable energy program has been initiated, starting with 3,000 MW of photovoltaic solar energy for which contracts have recently been signed. “Simultaneously, we are implementing electromobility infrastructures, with 277 charging stations already installed and a target of 700 by the end of 2024,” he announced.
To successfully execute these projects, Arkab stressed the importance of overcoming several major challenges. These include strengthening coordination and synergy among sector actors, enhancing coordination between Sonelgaz subsidiaries and energy services to meet state-supported program deadlines, and improving the quality and sustainability of public energy services. These measures aim to provide every region with the necessary conditions for development. Finally, Arkab reaffirmed the sector’s commitment to achieving the set objectives for the energy and mining sectors, ensuring “a sustainable energy future for our country.”
