Algeria’s FM Attaf Responds to Mali: “Despicable Remarks”

Speaking at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Attaf stressed that Algeria would not be swayed by such remarks, maintaining a response grounded in “polite and sophisticated language” that reflects Algeria’s deep ties with its neighbors and regional peoples. He emphasized that Algeria is neither affected nor shaken by “transitory circumstantial factors” and remains committed to fostering partnerships based on security, stability, and prosperity.

Support for Sahel Countries

In this context, Attaf reiterated Algeria’s full solidarity with the nations and people of the region, affirming that the security and stability of the Sahel are integral to Algeria’s and North Africa’s own security. He noted that Algeria believes regional stability is closely tied to achieving sustainable development, poverty reduction, and combating terrorism and climate change, which severely impact the region.

Western Sahara: The Last Colony in Africa

On the issue of Western Sahara, Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s ongoing support for the United Nations’ efforts and its envoy’s mission to find a political solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people their inalienable right to self-determination. He asserted that colonization in Western Sahara is destined to end, no matter how long it takes, and that the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people will ultimately be realized. Attaf warned against any attempts to impose a fait accompli, declaring that “Algeria will not accept any such attempts” and that it will continue to support the Sahrawi people’s struggle for self-determination.

A Libyan-Libyan Solution

Regarding Libya, Attaf called for swift action to address the scourge of foreign interference, which plunders the country’s resources and deepens internal divisions. He reiterated Algeria’s belief that Libyans will only unite and achieve national reconciliation by putting an end to these foreign interventions. Algeria, he affirmed, supports the Libyan people’s pursuit of free elections and a national consensus that will pave the way for a united and stable Libya.

African Solutions for African Problems

Turning to the African continent, Attaf emphasized Algeria’s desire to find local solutions for sustainable development and conflict resolution. He stressed that Africa must develop its own solutions and leverage its internal potential to diffuse conflicts and achieve stability. Attaf urged African nations to invest in modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and renewable energy while continuing efforts to reform international financial institutions to ensure better representation for African countries in the global financial system.
