ALGIERS- In a comprehensive interview with the Qatari channel Al Jazeera, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, discussed the current state of relations with France, shedding light on significant challenges.
Attaf emphasized that France is a partner, and categorizing diplomatic relations as purely “good” or “bad” oversimplifies the complex dynamics between states. He acknowledged that the relationship evolves, experiencing both tensions and improvements.
Addressing the delayed state visit of the Algerian President to France, Attaf clarified that the visit is still in preparation, affirming its ongoing relevance. However, he noted that the visit was postponed due to unfavorable conditions for an ideal visit.
Attaf identified five pivotal and weighty issues affecting the bilateral relationship, signaling that agreements have not been reached yet. The key topics include matters related to memory, mobility, economic cooperation, and the consequences of nuclear tests.
He provided concrete examples, highlighting the unresolved issue of the consequences of nuclear tests in the Algerian Sahara. Algeria seeks acknowledgment of the damages caused and compensation, which remains an unresolved point of contention.
Additionally, Attaf mentioned economic cooperation and the proposal for a $100 million investment fund in partnership with France, a proposal that France did not accept.
The Minister pointed out that a fifth sensitive and symbolically significant issue revolves around the sword and Burnous (cloak) of Emir Abdelkader. During the planned visit of the Algerian President to France, they requested the restitution of Emir Abdelkader’s sword and Burnous from the Château d’Amboise, where the emir was imprisoned. However, France refused this symbolic gesture, impacting the broader diplomatic context.
