Algiers, Algeria | June 6th, 2024 — The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, officially inaugurated the construction of six new proximity grain storage centers in Bouira, a move aimed at bolstering Algeria’s agricultural infrastructure. This development comes as part of a broader national strategy to enhance food security and support strategic crop production.

Launching the Grain Storage Initiative

During an extensive inspection visit of various agricultural projects and farms across the wilaya, Minister Cherfa, accompanied by the Wali of Bouira and other local authorities, laid the foundation stones for these essential infrastructures. In the commune of El Asnam, the first two centers were initiated. Minister Cherfa emphasized the critical role of these projects in the national plan for developing strategic crops.

Expanding Storage Capacity in El Hachimia

Further advancing this initiative, the minister also launched the construction of four additional storage centers at the “Si El Hachemi” agricultural production unit (formerly a pilot farm) in the commune of El Hachimia. Each of these centers will have a storage capacity of 5,000 tonnes. Minister Cherfa urged the project leaders to adhere to the deadlines, ensuring timely completion to meet the increasing storage demands.

Supporting the Aviculture Sector

In El Hachimia, Minister Cherfa inspected the successful investment project, the “Bali” farm, which spans 2 hectares and specializes in egg production and avian waste valorization. He listened to the concerns of local producers, assuring them of the government’s full support to rejuvenate the aviculture sector. He highlighted recent measures, including the resumption of importing essential inputs from Spain, which have stabilized the sector and protected consumers’ purchasing power.

Commencement of the 2023/2024 Harvesting Campaign

The minister’s visit also marked the launch of the 2023/2024 harvesting campaign in the northern regions, inaugurated at the Boucheraine Mohamed agricultural production unit in Lasnam. Here, he visited an agricultural products exhibition and received briefings on the local agricultural sector from various officials and researchers.

Acknowledging Agricultural Achievements

Minister Cherfa praised the dedication and efforts of agricultural professionals, emphasizing the importance of their role in achieving food security. He noted significant progress in programs endorsed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, including the rehabilitation of the green dam, the expansion of storage capacities, and the creation of specialized agricultural production units for strategic crops.

Electrification of Agricultural Exploitations

In Aïn Bessam, Minister Cherfa initiated the electrification of the “Zouayed Abdelkrim” farm, which specializes in cereal and potato production. He highlighted the rapid progress of the electrification program for agricultural exploitations, a directive from the President since 2020, and its expected positive impact on future agricultural productivity.

Advances in Potato Production and Water Management

During his visit, the minister reviewed presentations on potato production and unconventional water use in the wilaya. He commended the 52% completion rate of the general agricultural census in Bouira since its commencement on May 19. This high participation rate by agricultural professionals and effective local authority involvement underscores the importance and success of this vital operation.

The minister’s visit to Bouira showcased the significant strides being made in Algeria’s agricultural sector. The development of grain storage centers, support for the aviculture sector, and advancements in agricultural electrification are key components of a comprehensive strategy to enhance national food security and support sustainable agricultural growth. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to empowering local producers and meeting the country’s growing food demands.
