Algiers, Algeria | November 03rd, 2024 — In a significant step toward reinforcing Algeria-India relations, General Said Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army, and his counterpart, General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff of India, signed a milestone agreement in military cooperation on Sunday. The official signing ceremony, held in Algiers, was attended by General Chauhan, who led a high-ranking Indian military delegation on an official visit to Algeria.
General Chanegriha expressed his appreciation for General Chauhan’s attendance at the commemorative events marking the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s November Revolution, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Highlighting the symbolic importance of General Chauhan’s presence at this occasion, Chanegriha stated, “This visit underscores the enduring respect and solidarity between our two countries, rooted in shared principles of sovereignty and resilience.”
The visit is part of a broader movement to strengthen Algeria-India relations, which have seen increasing cooperation in recent years, particularly in areas of defense, trade, and energy. Historically aligned through the Non-Aligned Movement, Algeria and India share a commitment to self-determination, respect for sovereignty, and mutual support in multilateral arenas. As regional leaders in North Africa and South Asia, both countries bring unique strategic advantages to the partnership, contributing to a more balanced and multipolar global order.
In the energy sector, Algeria, a major supplier of oil and natural gas, has emerged as a key partner for India, which relies on diversified sources to meet its growing energy demands. This relationship, rooted in economic pragmatism, aligns with Algeria’s goal of expanding its global energy market presence and with India’s pursuit of energy security. Indian companies have also shown interest in Algeria’s renewable energy projects, creating opportunities for future collaboration on sustainable development initiatives.
The recent defense accord between Algeria and India represents not only a step forward in bilateral military cooperation but also a foundation for long-term collaboration across a variety of sectors. It also complements the recent official visit by India’s President to Algeria, underscoring the strong political will on both sides to deepen diplomatic and strategic ties.
