Algiers, Algeria | November 25th, 2024 — In a significant step to deepen bilateral relations, Mohamed Amroune, President of the Commission for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and the Algerian Community Abroad, received an Iranian parliamentary delegation from the Commission of National Security and Foreign Policy of the Iranian Majlis Echoura. Acting under the directive of Salah Goudjil, Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Amroune led the Algerian delegation in discussions held at the Council of the Nation’s headquarters on Sunday, November 24, 2024.

The Iranian delegation, led by Dr. Ibrahim Azizi, President of the Iranian Commission, was accompanied by Mohammad Reza Babai, Iran’s Ambassador to Algeria. The meeting highlighted the enduring friendship and mutual respect underpinning the Algeria-Iran relationship and explored avenues to elevate this partnership to new heights, particularly in political, economic, and parliamentary collaboration.

Shared Goals for Regional Stability and Justice
Discussions centered on aligning efforts to tackle shared regional and global challenges, with a focus on the Palestinian cause and the broader issues confronting the Islamic world. Mohamed Amroune praised the leadership of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Iranian Speaker of Parliament Massoud Pezeshkian for their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the economic sector, ensuring these relations reflect the political excellence already achieved.

Amroune underscored the robust coordination between Algeria and Iran in international and regional forums, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Member States. He emphasized the urgent need for collective action to uphold international legality and implement resolutions amid a deteriorating global security landscape, marked by the catastrophic consequences of the genocide perpetrated by the Zionist occupier in Gaza, the Palestinian territories, and Lebanon.

He reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering stance against colonialism, a cornerstone of its foreign policy under President Tebboune’s leadership, and called for enhanced Islamic parliamentary collaboration to champion this noble objective.

Iran’s Tribute to Algeria’s Legacy and Commitment
Dr. Ibrahim Azizi expressed his nation’s deep admiration for Algeria’s steadfast commitment to justice and its historical legacy, particularly on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Algeria’s 1954 Revolution, which he described as a source of pride for Africa. Azizi highlighted the growing multidimensional ties between Algeria and Iran, fostered by agreements signed earlier this year, and identified agriculture, tourism, and knowledge-based economies as key areas for expanded cooperation.

Azizi also commended Algeria’s principled positions on international issues, its unwavering support for just causes, and its relentless advocacy for oppressed peoples, including its staunch defense of Palestine against Zionist aggression.

Advancing Parliamentary Diplomacy and Solidarity
Both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing parliamentary diplomacy through mechanisms such as friendship groups, exchange programs, and collaborative visits. These initiatives aim to deepen the solidarity between the two nations’ legislative bodies, fostering active parliamentary partnerships that will bolster existing cooperation and promote shared goals on regional and global stages.

This high-level engagement underscores the alignment of Algeria and Iran in championing justice, reinforcing stability, and advancing the aspirations of the Islamic world. It also highlights the shared commitment to elevating their partnership through meaningful diplomatic and parliamentary initiatives.

Algeria, Iran keen to strengthen historical ties, propel multifaceted cooperation

Algeria and Iran are steadfastly committed to enhancing their historic partnership and advancing multifaceted cooperation across various domains, building on shared revolutionary principles and a profound history of resistance against colonialism. Both nations share a legacy of defiance against oppression and injustice, as evidenced by Algeria’s struggle for independence, marked by the sacrifices of millions of martyrs, and Iran’s enduring revolution. United by their unwavering commitment to independence and justice, Algeria and Iran have positioned themselves as pioneers in combating terrorism and extremism, advocating for comprehensive efforts to eradicate these threats.

Politically, the two countries enjoy a longstanding relationship characterized by mutual respect and alignment on pivotal regional and global issues. Both nations converge on critical matters, including unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating political solutions to crises in Yemen, Syria, and Libya, and ensuring stability in global oil markets. Algeria’s principled stance in opposing military interventions in Syria, resisting attempts to label Hezbollah and Hamas as terrorist organizations, and rejecting the Syrian opposition’s representation in the Arab League exemplifies its alignment with Iran’s perspectives on sovereignty and justice.

Rooted in decades of mutual respect and solidarity, the friendship between Algeria and Iran dates back to Algeria’s independence in 1962, with Iran among the first nations to recognize its sovereignty. This bond deepened further following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, leading to shared stances on pressing issues within the Islamic world and the establishment of over 70 agreements fostering comprehensive cooperation. The cultural ties between the two nations have also flourished, with Iran celebrating Algeria’s revolutionary legacy through poetry, media, and religious gatherings, and Ayatollah Khomeini hailing the Algerian revolution as a model of both resistance and reform.

Despite occasional challenges, Algeria and Iran have consistently renewed and strengthened their ties. Algeria’s consistent support for Iran’s nuclear rights and the establishment of a parliamentary friendship group underscore their enduring partnership. The election of the current Presidents has ushered in a renewed era of cooperation, with both leaders emphasizing their commitment to eliminating obstacles and expanding bilateral relations. This determination reflects their shared vision of leveraging the countries’ substantial capacities for the benefit of their peoples and the broader Islamic world.
