“Algeria is an Essential Partner for the UK in Africa,” Affirms British Ambassador

Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — In a resounding affirmation of Algeria’s pivotal role on the African continent, James Robert Stephen Downer, the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Algeria, underscored the strength of bilateral ties during a ceremony marking the presentation of his credentials to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
“Algeria is an essential partner for the United Kingdom in Africa,” stated Ambassador Downer, highlighting his government’s commitment to advancing cooperation with Algeria across a spectrum of domains. This declaration signifies a robust diplomatic intent to solidify and expand the partnership between the two nations.
The Ambassador emphasized the breadth of the existing relationship, which is grounded in mutual respect and shared priorities. He noted that the ties between the United Kingdom and Algeria extend across trade, defense, culture, and education, with both nations working collaboratively on numerous global challenges.
Particularly noteworthy was his recognition of Algeria’s growing interest in integrating the English language into its educational system. “The UK’s government is keen to support Algeria’s aspirations in this area, paving the way for greater cultural and academic exchange,” Downer remarked.
Ambassador Downer expressed optimism about collaboration on critical global issues, such as climate change and energy transformation. He outlined the UK’s readiness to partner with Algeria in adopting innovative strategies to combat environmental challenges and enhance industrial and service sectors for sustainable growth in both countries.
“Together, we can accomplish much more in addressing the complex challenges facing the world today,” the Ambassador asserted, signaling a shared commitment to sustainability and economic resilience.
The collaboration between Algeria and the United Kingdom within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was another focal point of Ambassador Downer’s remarks. He highlighted Algeria’s recent leadership role in presiding over the UNSC, calling for enhanced cooperation to address pressing international issues.
Downer also reiterated the UK’s support for Algeria’s diplomatic endeavors, particularly in advancing stability and prosperity in the African region.
Beyond the diplomatic sphere, Ambassador Downer conveyed his personal enthusiasm for exploring Algeria’s rich history and vibrant culture. He expressed his desire to engage deeply with the country by visiting its diverse regions, from its historical landmarks to its modern cultural expressions. “Algeria’s youth, history, and culinary traditions are a testament to its uniqueness and vitality,” he remarked.
