Algiers, Algeria | January 18th, 2025 — Algeria and Italy have announced a joint agricultural project focusing on the cultivation of sugar cane and various cereals. Set to span 50 hectares in the Hassi El-Gara commune, located in the southern region of El-Meniaa, this project represents a significant leap in agricultural collaboration between the two nations. According to sources from the local Wilaya of El-Meniaa, the initiative was disclosed during a meeting held at the Wilaya’s headquarters, where project developers and local agricultural authorities discussed its potential and strategic benefits.
The initiative will be implemented under the auspices of Algeria’s Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, which continues to facilitate large-scale agricultural investments through the “green corridor” program. This program is designed to provide dedicated support for major agricultural projects and to streamline the approval processes for large investments in the sector.
During the meeting, Mosbah Youcef, the director of the local agricultural services, emphasized the significant agricultural potential of the region, particularly its abundant water resources, fertile lands, and favorable climate—attributes that make it an ideal location for the cultivation of strategic crops such as sugar cane and cereals.
The project also comes at a time when El-Meniaa is witnessing a surge in foreign investments within its agricultural sector. This is largely attributed to Algeria’s new investment law, which offers a range of incentives and guarantees to foreign investors looking to establish projects in the country. The positive reception of these reforms underscores Algeria’s commitment to improving agricultural production and enhancing economic growth through foreign partnerships.
