Algiers, Algeria | March 3rd, 2025 — In a move reflecting the deepening strategic ties between Algeria and Italy, Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held high-level discussions on Monday, March 3, 2025, in Algiers with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Antonio Tajani. The meeting, which took place against the backdrop of the Algeria-Italy Business Forum, was attended by top industry leaders, including Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi and Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal, alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies. Also present were the Algerian Ambassador to Italy and the Italian Ambassador to Algeria, underscoring the diplomatic weight of the discussions.
The talks revolved around the robust and historic cooperation between Algeria and Italy, particularly in the economic and energy sectors. Both sides reaffirmed the strategic nature of this partnership, which is built upon long-standing trust and shared interests. Minister Arkab highlighted the crucial role played by Italian companies in Algeria’s hydrocarbon sector, acknowledging their contributions to infrastructure development and the enhancement of Algeria’s production capabilities. He further emphasized the necessity of maintaining this momentum through ambitious, forward-looking projects that align with Algeria’s long-term energy strategy.
For his part, Antonio Tajani reiterated Italy’s unwavering commitment to strengthening energy cooperation with Algeria. He lauded Algeria’s role as a reliable energy supplier to Europe, particularly in the natural gas sector, and expressed his country’s keen interest in expanding collaboration beyond hydrocarbons. The Italian minister underscored the growing potential for joint investments in renewable energies, particularly in solar and wind power, as well as in the emerging field of green hydrogen. He also stressed the importance of developing cross-border electricity interconnections between Algeria and Italy, a project that could significantly enhance energy security and integration within the Mediterranean region.
A key aspect of the discussions also revolved around Italy’s “Mattei Plan,” an initiative aimed at fostering stronger partnerships with African nations through major developmental projects in energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s support for this initiative, emphasizing its potential to drive regional economic integration and promote sustainable development across Africa.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to further consolidate their economic and energy partnership through new joint projects and to intensify strategic dialogue to ensure a balanced and mutually beneficial collaboration.
