Algiers, Algeria | January 05th, 2024 —  Algeria and Japan have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on hydrocarbons, renewable energy, and mining development. This renewed partnership was highlighted during a high-level meeting on Sunday between Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, and the newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to Algeria , at the ministry’s headquarters.

The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials from the ministry, underscored the historical depth of Algerian-Japanese relations and explored new avenues for enhanced collaboration. Discussions primarily revolved around advancing cooperation in hydrocarbon exploration and field development, as well as expanding joint efforts in renewable energy projects, including solar power, hydrogen production, and energy storage technologies.

Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s strategic vision for its energy sector, inviting Japanese firms to participate in major national projects. He highlighted the importance of technology transfer, capacity-building, and local manufacturing in critical areas such as seawater desalination and renewable energy infrastructure. “Algeria is committed to attracting foreign investment that prioritizes mutual benefit, technological advancement, and sustainable development,” Arkab stated, urging Japanese companies to engage in the nation’s large-scale energy transformation initiatives.

A key point of the discussions was the potential for Japanese participation in Algeria’s expanding rare earth minerals and critical metals sector, essential for the global green energy transition. Arkab presented ongoing mega-mining projects aimed at diversifying Algeria’s economy and reducing reliance on hydrocarbons, inviting Japanese expertise and investment to help unlock the sector’s full potential.

Ambassador Suzuki Kotaro, in turn, commended Algeria’s evolving investment climate and acknowledged the wealth of opportunities available in the Algerian market. He conveyed Japan’s strong interest in deepening bilateral ties, particularly in hydrocarbons, mining exploration, and renewable energy technologies. “Japanese enterprises recognize Algeria’s vast potential as a strategic partner in Africa, and we are committed to fostering long-term, mutually beneficial collaboration,” Kotaro affirmed.

This dialogue signals a pivotal moment in Algerian-Japanese relations, as both nations work towards a future defined by sustainable development, technological exchange, and economic diversification. The strengthened energy partnership is expected to open new chapters of bilateral cooperation, driving innovation and shared prosperity across both countries.
