ALGIERS- In a bid to foster environmental awareness and excellence in journalism, the 3rd edition of the National Environmental Journalism Competition (CNJE) was officially launched in Algiers. Organized by the Caving and Mountain Sports Club (CSPS) of Ain El Beida in collaboration with “K.B.M Algeria” and under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment and Renewable Energy, the competition aims to encourage journalists to delve into critical environmental issues, particularly focusing on the theme of “Climate Change.”
The announcement came during a press conference at the El Djazaïr hotel, where organizers shared insights into the competition’s objectives and outlined the criteria for participation. Journalists across various national media platforms who have covered environmental topics since the beginning of the year are invited to submit their written articles, television and radio reports by November 20.
A distinguished jury, comprising experts and specialists in the environmental domain, will meticulously evaluate the entries, with the winners set to be unveiled at a ceremony coinciding with World Mountain Day on December 11.
During the press conference, Samir Grimes, a member of the competition jury and an international expert in environment and sustainable development, voiced his aspiration to establish a national platform for environmental journalism by 2024. This platform would serve as a collaborative space for journalists, experts, researchers, and enthusiasts to exchange perspectives, reflecting the escalating interest in environmental issues both nationally and internationally.
Mr. Grimes underscored the need for such a platform, stating that it arises from increased interactions with individuals passionate about environmental concerns, especially journalists. The growing demand for reliable environmental data and information has driven the initiative to create a virtual communication space. This space aims to bridge the gap between environmental experts and the press, facilitating the creation of media content grounded in scientific references. Ultimately, this endeavor seeks to contribute to the widespread dissemination of environmental awareness, fostering individual and collective environmental responsibility within Algerian society.
