Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2024 — In a historic advancement for Algeria’s pharmaceutical sector, Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, inaugurated the continent’s first insulin crystal production unit. This pioneering facility will manufacture the essential raw materials required for insulin production, marking a significant leap for the region’s healthcare industry.
The new unit will have an annual production capacity of 1,500 kilograms, designed to cater to the national market while also planning to export surplus production. The project represents an investment of 1.7 billion Algerian dinars and is expected to be completed within 36 months. Spanning an area of 5,000 square meters, the facility is set to create 200 jobs, providing a substantial boost to the local economy.
Expansion of Pharmaceutical Production Capabilities
During his visit, Minister Aoun also laid the groundwork for two additional production units aimed at manufacturing raw materials for pharmaceuticals. The first of these units will produce raw materials for paracetamol and salicylic acid, with an annual capacity of 2,000 tonnes. This project, covering an area of 6,000 square meters, is being developed in collaboration with the Iranian company IPF and involves an investment of 675 million Algerian dinars. The unit is expected to be operational by the second half of 2024.
The third unit will focus on producing raw materials for cardiovascular medications, antidiabetic drugs, and anti-inflammatory medications. With an annual production capacity of 4 tonnes, this facility will be constructed on a 10,000 square meter site and is slated to begin production within 18 months.
Strengthening Algeria’s Pharmaceutical Sovereignty
The Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production highlighted that the successful completion of these projects will significantly enhance Algeria’s pharmaceutical industry, reduce dependency on imports, and strengthen the nation’s health sovereignty. These initiatives reflect Algeria’s commitment to advancing its pharmaceutical sector and ensuring a stable supply of essential medications.
These developments mark a major step forward in Algeria’s industrial and pharmaceutical capabilities, positioning the country as a leader in pharmaceutical production in Africa.
