Algiers, Algeria | September 25th, 2024 — The Algerian Ministry of Public Works and Basic Facilities has announced a national and international tender to expand and develop the Djen Djen Port, located in Jijel, eastern Algeria. As the country’s largest commercial port, this expansion aligns with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasizing Algeria’s strategic intent to elevate its infrastructure to global standards.

The tender, officially released and reviewed by “Echorouk,” seeks specialized international expertise to study the expansion of Djen Djen, which will solidify its role as a key Mediterranean trade hub. The focus of the expansion is to significantly enhance its capacity, allowing the port to handle more than 2 million containers annually by the end of 2025. This development is set to make Djen Djen one of the largest container terminals in the western Mediterranean region.

Expansion Details and Strategic Significance

According to the tender details, the National Agency for the Realization of Maritime Facilities is spearheading this ambitious project. The primary objectives include a comprehensive study of port traffic, economic needs, financial assessments, surveys, and the design of expanded infrastructure. The project will include increasing the quay depth from 18 meters to 20 meters and extending the length to 3,000 meters, enabling the docking of much larger vessels and increased cargo loads.

A senior official from the Ministry confirmed to “Echorouk” that this expansion initiative directly follows the instructions of President Tebboune, reflecting Algeria’s desire to modernize its infrastructure in line with global maritime standards. The expansion is not just about boosting port capacity but also about improving Algeria’s logistical connectivity with international trade routes.

Currently, Djen Djen Port stands out as the only port in Algeria capable of accommodating large ships due to its deep-water quay. The expansion will make the port even more competitive, enhancing its ability to serve larger vessels and larger volumes of goods, particularly as Algeria seeks to position itself as a key player in Mediterranean shipping.

Strategic Advantages and Connectivity

Beyond its physical expansion, Djen Djen Port benefits from several strategic advantages that will facilitate its growth as a regional hub. One of the most critical aspects is its proximity to the East-West Highway, with a direct link at El Eulma in the Setif province, just 110 kilometers away. The first section of this vital highway connection is expected to open in the coming weeks, further strengthening Djen Djen’s access to inland transport routes.

Moreover, the port is equipped with a railway freight station located within the port complex, boasting an annual handling capacity of 12 million tons. The facility is also connected to major industrial sites, including the Bellara steel complex in El Milia, which lies 45 kilometers away, and the Ramdan Djamel station in Skikda, situated 150 kilometers from the port. These connections enhance the port’s role in industrial supply chains and facilitate the efficient movement of goods across Algeria and beyond.

The Djen Djen Port is also strategically located just 50 nautical miles from one of the world’s key shipping lanes, which stretches from Asia to Europe. This proximity positions the port to capitalize on global shipping traffic, further boosting its international competitiveness.

Progress and Future Outlook

Development at the port is progressing steadily, with the final container terminal project expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Once operational, this terminal will drastically increase the port’s container handling capacity from the current 53,000 containers (recorded in 2023) to over 2 million containers annually. Alongside this, the port managed over 9 million tons of various goods in 2023, reinforcing its role as a critical player in Algeria’s trade and logistics sectors.

The expansion of Djen Djen Port is part of Algeria’s broader strategy to modernize its infrastructure and diversify its economy, aligning with President Tebboune’s vision to strengthen the country’s global standing. This project not only signals a new era for Algerian ports but also holds significant potential to elevate the country’s role in global maritime commerce, particularly within the Mediterranean basin.
