Algeria, Libya Strengthen Strategic Customs Cooperation: New Bilateral Agreements Aim to Bolster Security, Economic Integration, and Regional Stability

Algiers, Algeria | December 25th, 2024 — In a decisive move to enhance economic ties and secure their shared frontier, Libya and Algeria have signed a series of customs agreements during the Joint Committee meetings held earlier this week. The agreements underscore the shared commitment of the two nations to modernize border operations, combat cross-border smuggling, and foster regional stability and development.

The Libyan Customs Authority hailed the new accords as pivotal for reinforcing anti-smuggling measures and streamlining customs processes between the two neighboring countries. According to officials, these agreements will also facilitate the exchange of technical expertise, ensuring that both nations can modernize their customs infrastructure and address shared challenges along their extensive 982-kilometer border.

Highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Libyan Customs Chief Mohamed Abdullah outlined the operational and strategic benefits, noting that the agreements mark “a critical step in aligning our efforts to secure the border while promoting lawful trade and economic growth.”

From the Algerian side, Customs Director General, Ahmed Chabti, reiterated the significance of bilateral engagement in fostering mutual prosperity. “These agreements reflect our unwavering commitment to regional cooperation and security, which are essential for the broader development of the Maghreb region,” Chabti stated.

Among the provisions included in the agreements are advanced protocols for combating illicit trade, joint training programs to enhance the capacity of customs personnel, and the implementation of cutting-edge technologies to improve border surveillance. The two nations also committed to establishing regular joint reviews to ensure compliance and assess the effectiveness of the new measures.
