Algiers, Algeria | May 18, 2024 — In alignment with President Tebboune’s directives to address the concerns of the Algerian diaspora, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lounès Magramane, led a meeting on May 17-18. This assembly, held at the Algerian Embassy in France, convened all Algerian consular chiefs stationed in Europe and North America.

The meeting, attended by Ambassador Saïd Moussi and other senior ministry officials, provided a comprehensive evaluation of consular services for Algerians living abroad. It offered an opportunity to review the current status and implementation methods of measures introduced by national authorities to enhance service quality in alignment with the strong ties Algerian expatriates feel towards their homeland, thereby addressing their diverse and pressing needs.

Participants highlighted the positive impact of recently announced measures for the diaspora, such as easing travel conditions during the summer, extending working hours and days, reintroducing the appointment system, covering repatriation costs for deceased individuals, and other administrative facilitation measures.

Furthermore, the meeting allowed for a detailed discussion on the progress in renewing biometric passports. This led to an exchange of views and experiences on additional measures that could enable the Algerian diplomatic and consular apparatus to overcome challenges and further streamline this process in foreign services.

Precise Directives to Enhance Service Quality

This assembly, taking place just months before the upcoming presidential election, also reviewed all aspects related to this significant national political event to ensure optimal conditions for its success.

In conclusion, practical guidelines and specific directives were issued to consular chiefs to bolster the quality of service provided to the Algerian community abroad. This aligns with President Tebboune’s stated intention to afford the diaspora a prominent role in Algeria’s diplomatic efforts and ensure their full participation in the building of the New Algeria.
