Algeria, Mauritania Ink Cooperation Agreement on Personal Data Protection

Algiers, Algeria | October 8th, 2024 — In a significant advancement of bilateral relations, Algeria and Mauritania have formalized their commitment to enhancing data privacy through the signing of a cooperation agreement on personal data protection. The agreement was signed on Tuesday by Samir Bourehil, President of Algeria’s National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data, and Mohamed Lemine Ould Sidi, head of Mauritania’s Data Protection Authority. The signing ceremony took place in Algiers and was attended by Karim Bibi Triki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, along with senior officials from both countries.

This agreement aims to foster collaboration between the two nations, focusing on training and the exchange of expertise within their respective data protection authorities. Bourehil emphasized that this initiative underscores President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s commitment to enhancing ties between Algeria and Mauritania while ensuring that advancements in technology uphold human dignity, privacy, and public liberties.

In his remarks, Ould Sidi praised the agreement as a testament to the longstanding and robust relations between Algeria and Mauritania, driven by the political will of their leaders. He expressed optimism that this cooperation would lead to critical decisions and recommendations for advancing data protection frameworks in both nations.

The Mauritanian delegation was also given insight into Algeria’s accomplishments in the domain of personal data protection, including its legal and technical advancements. Notably, Algeria has established a digital information portal designed to streamline communication between public and private entities regarding personal data management.

This agreement not only reinforces the bilateral cooperation between Algeria and Mauritania but also aligns with Algeria’s broader goals of digitization and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms, as articulated in the country’s national strategy for personal data protection.
