Bilateral Accord Aims to Bolster Regional Security and Foster Military Collaboration Amidst Growing Geopolitical Challenges
Algiers, Algeria | April 16th, 2025 — In a significant move to enhance regional security and military collaboration, Algeria and Mauritania have formalised a comprehensive defence cooperation agreement. The accord was signed in Algiers by General Saïd Chanegriha, Chief of Staff of the Algerian People’s National Army, and Mauritania’s Minister of Defence, Henana Ould Sidi Ould Henana, who is leading a high-level military delegation on an official visit to Algeria.
The signing ceremony, held at the headquarters of the Algerian Ministry of National Defence, was marked by traditional military honours, including the hoisting of national flags and a ceremonial guard. The event was attended by senior military officials from both nations, underscoring the importance of this bilateral engagement.
Shared Vision for Regional Stability
During the discussions, both parties exchanged views on the evolving security landscape in North Africa and the broader Sahel region. They emphasised the necessity of a unified approach to address common challenges such as terrorism, organised crime, and border security.
General Chanegriha highlighted the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between Algeria and Mauritania, stating, “Our nations are bound by shared ambitions and face common challenges. This agreement reflects our commitment to work together to ensure the stability and security of our region.”
He further stressed the strategic importance of the Algerian-Mauritanian relationship, noting that “the convergence of our efforts is vital in confronting the multifaceted threats that jeopardise our collective peace and development.”
Commitment to Enhanced Military Cooperation
The agreement outlines a framework for intensified military cooperation, including joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations to combat transnational threats. Both nations have pledged to establish mechanisms for continuous dialogue and collaboration to adapt to emerging security dynamics.
Minister Henana Ould Sidi Ould Henana expressed his satisfaction with the strengthened ties, stating, “This partnership is a testament to our mutual dedication to fostering peace and security. Algeria’s leadership in promoting regional stability is commendable, and we are eager to deepen our cooperation.”
