Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — The National Defense Ministry has deployed a military aircraft from the Air Force to transport a substantial shipment of medical supplies to three southern provinces in Algeria. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility in remote areas.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, the aircraft successfully delivered a significant load of medications and vaccines aimed at preventing malaria and diphtheria, along with various other medical supplies. These essential resources were provided by the Ministry of Health to support the provinces of Tamanrasset, In Guezzam, and Bordj Badji Mokhtar.
Emergence of Diphtheria, Malaria Cases in Southern Algeria: Health Ministry Ensures Complete Control
The Algerian Ministry of Health has taken swift action in response to the recent emergence of diphtheria and malaria cases in the southern wilayas of Tamanrasset and Aïn Guezzam. Djamel Fourar, the Director General of Prevention at the Ministry of Health, reassured the public, affirming that the situation is fully under control. Speaking on national radio, Dr. Fourar explained that the cases detected were imported from Sahel countries, particularly Niger and Mali, and emphasized that Algeria had been officially certified as malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019.
Dr. Fourar pointed out that Algeria’s health system is well-prepared to manage both malaria and diphtheria, equipped with specialized protocols and a substantial stockpile of essential medicines. “We have a significant supply of medication to manage these cases, and our health protocols are designed to swiftly contain any threats,” Fourar affirmed, stressing the nation’s preparedness.
Since 2023, the Ministry of Health has launched three extensive vaccination campaigns targeting both malaria and diphtheria, a proactive approach that Dr. Fourar said has been crucial in preventing further spread of the diseases and safeguarding Algerian citizens.
Regarding diphtheria, Dr. Fourar highlighted its contagious nature, explaining that it spreads through air droplets and coughing, with symptoms such as severe throat inflammation and cardiac complications, which can be fatal if not treated promptly. He also addressed malaria, noting that it presents with high fever, chills, and cerebral complications that are dangerous without timely medical intervention.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Fourar reassured the public that the detected cases are being rigorously managed by the country’s healthcare system. “It is imperative for the public to understand that the situation is under control,” he stated, commending the collaboration between local authorities and health professionals.
