Algiers, Algeria | February 9th, 2025 —  Algeria has officially launched a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at protecting children from the dangers associated with improper internet usage. Under the theme “The Internet is a Vast Ocean – Let’s Help Our Children Navigate Safely,” the campaign runs from February 8 to 14, 2025, and represents a concerted effort by multiple government bodies, security institutions, and civil society organizations to instill a culture of digital responsibility and cyber hygiene among Algerian youth.

The initiative was inaugurated by Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, during a formal ceremony held at Algérie Télécom’s headquarters in Algiers. The event saw the participation of Minister of National Education Mohamed Sghir Saâdaoui, alongside representatives from several government sectors, security agencies, and public institutions. The campaign is spearheaded by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications in collaboration with the Ministry of National Defense, National Cybersecurity Agency, National Gendarmerie, General Directorate of National Security, and numerous other ministerial and institutional partners.

A Proactive Approach to Combating Digital Threats

In his address, Minister Zerrouki emphasized the urgency of addressing escalating digital threats targeting children, particularly in the wake of Algeria’s rapid digital transformation. He highlighted that the campaign was conceived in response to the growing risks posed by unregulated internet access and serves as a critical step toward reinforcing Algeria’s cybersecurity framework.

He outlined the four key pillars of the initiative:

  1. Children’s Use of the Internet – Raising awareness about the risks associated with online gaming, social media exposure, and unrestricted browsing.
  2. Cyber Fraud and Scams – Educating children and parents about online deception tactics and financial fraud.
  3. Risks of Social Media Misuse – Addressing concerns related to data privacy, personal information security, and digital blackmail.
  4. Cyber Harassment and Violations of Digital Privacy – Combating cyberbullying, online extortion, verbal abuse, and digital harassment.

Minister Zerrouki further stressed that the campaign is a civic initiative designed to empower children, parents, and educators with essential tools to detect and avoid digital dangers. He underscored the need to foster a cybersecurity-conscious culture that equips young internet users with best practices for safe and responsible online interactions.

A Nationwide, Multi-Sectoral Effort

The campaign coincides with the International Safer Internet Day on February 11, reinforcing Algeria’s commitment to global efforts in promoting digital safety. As part of the initiative, authorities will implement a comprehensive outreach plan that includes:

  • Workshops and awareness sessions in schools, vocational training centers, youth clubs, cultural institutions, and Quranic schools, conducted by experts from various government agencies.
  • A nationwide awareness caravan traversing multiple provinces to engage with local communities.
  • Provincial-level seminars to train religious leaders (imams and female religious guides) in integrating cyber-awareness messages into their sermons and teachings.
  • Mosque sermons and religious lectures dedicated to the ethical and safe use of digital platforms.
  • Digital awareness content disseminated via social media, government websites, and media platforms.
  • Influencer and celebrity engagement to amplify the campaign’s reach among youth.
  • Broadcast of public service announcements and text message alerts to inform citizens about online risks.
  • Television and radio programs dedicated to discussing the impact of internet misuse on children’s safety and well-being.

A Call for Collective Action in Securing Algeria’s Digital Future

Concluding his speech, Minister Zerrouki reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Algeria’s digital sovereignty by reinforcing cyber defenses and ensuring the protection of the nation’s most vulnerable users. He called for greater collaboration among institutions, civil society, and the private sector to create a secure, innovative, and sovereign digital ecosystem.

“Our challenge today is to ensure that our digital space is safe, innovative, and nationally controlled, fostering an environment where Algeria’s technological future remains secure and sustainable for generations to come,” he declared.

With a robust and multi-faceted approach, Algeria is taking decisive action to safeguard its children from online perils while laying the foundation for a more secure and resilient digital landscape.
