Algiers, Algeria | June 24th, 2024 — The Algerian government is intensifying its efforts to boost non-hydrocarbon exports and attract foreign direct investment (FDI). Following initiatives in the finance and transport sectors, the focus has now shifted to leveraging diplomatic channels to achieve these economic goals.
Strategic Diplomatic Engagement
The Ministry of Commerce and Export Promotion is leading initiatives to support economic actors in their efforts to penetrate foreign markets, aiming to fulfill the high-level objective of significantly increasing non-hydrocarbon exports. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its readiness to support this approach by reactivating business councils and facilitating visa agreements.
At a recent seminar on the “Role of Business Councils in Energizing Economic Diplomacy,” Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf emphasized the importance of evaluating the results achieved so far and enhancing mechanisms to optimize their positive impact. Attaf reaffirmed the full commitment of his department to promote Algeria’s economic diplomacy.
Launch of Interactive Platform for Business Councils
To further these efforts, the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI) has launched an interactive digital platform aimed at facilitating exchanges between Algerian and foreign investors through joint business councils. Additionally, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Diplomatic Institute and International Relations (IDRI) and CACI to provide training in this area.
Commerce and Export Promotion Minister Tayeb Zitouni highlighted the necessity of diplomatic involvement in promoting national production. He emphasized the need to review the activities of the 42 business councils, redefining their objectives to serve national development and support both Algerian companies and foreign investors.
Zitouni noted that this initiative is crucial for promoting non-hydrocarbon exports and enhancing Algeria’s appeal as an investment destination. The goal is to strengthen national production, reduce dependence on external markets, and direct surplus production towards exports.
Collaborative Efforts for Economic Growth
Kamel Moula, President of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (Crea), underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to promote non-hydrocarbon exports. Moula called for the renewal of operational mechanisms to enhance economic exchanges and cooperation with foreign actors. He stressed that the activities of business councils should align with Algeria’s objectives, particularly in attracting FDI and developing non-hydrocarbon exports.
These strategic moves mark a significant step towards revitalizing Algeria’s economic diplomacy, with a strong emphasis on non-hydrocarbon sectors to foster sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness.
