Algiers, Algeria | December 31st, 2024 — In a move that underscores Algeria’s commitment to economic growth and technological advancement, Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Mines, inaugurated three production and service units in Oran. These include the Boutlelis electricity production plant, a manufacturing unit for electrical and gas meters, and the new regional electricity system center.

Accompanied by Taha Derbal, Minister of Hydraulics, as well as Rachid Hachichi and Mourad Adjal, CEOs of Sonatrach and Sonelgaz respectively, Arkab emphasized the strategic significance of these projects. He hailed them as “valuable milestones” in Algeria’s journey toward energy sustainability and industrial self-reliance.

The Boutlelis electricity production plant, spanning 20 hectares, is among the largest in Algeria, boasting a production capacity of 464 MW. This state-of-the-art facility employs combined-cycle technology utilizing both gas and steam turbines, marking a critical contribution to addressing the growing electricity demand in western Algeria. Arkab highlighted its role as a robust pillar supporting the national economy amidst global energy challenges, while the site employs 109 workers, further bolstering the region’s economic landscape.

At the inauguration of the electrical and gas meter manufacturing unit, Arkab underscored its capacity to end Algeria’s reliance on imported equipment. This facility, completed in just 12 months at a cost of 1.61 billion DZD, positions Sonelgaz as a self-sufficient producer and exporter of advanced metering devices. The Minister noted that such initiatives align with Algeria’s strategic shift toward clean and renewable energy sources, reinforcing its role in the global energy transition.

Mourad Adjal, Director General of Sonelgaz, revealed that the Algerian Electrical and Gas Industries Company (SAIG) in Oran has already exported 341 electric vehicle charging stations to Italy and Libya, alongside a substantial volume of electricity meters sent to neighboring countries. These exports exemplify the diversification of Algeria’s foreign exchange sources beyond hydrocarbons.

The newly inaugurated regional electricity system center in Oran represents a leap forward in Algeria’s energy infrastructure. Designed to enhance service quality, it provides a remote information system with robust security features and interoperability with other systems, ensuring a more resilient and efficient power network.
