ALGIERS- In a recent turn of events, the strained relations between Algeria and Morocco have taken a new hit with controversial statements from French historian Bernard Logan, known for his affiliations with the Moroccan regime. Logan’s assertions, published in the Moroccan newspaper “360LE,” which is closely tied to King Mohammed VI, have reignited historical and territorial disputes, raising concerns about the potential for heightened tensions in the region.
In his latest contribution, Logan claimed that France was the creator of Algeria, alleging that it annexed territories, defined borders, and determined the country’s name. These provocative statements not only challenge Algeria’s historical narrative but also echo sentiments of factions nostalgic for a “French Algeria,” a notion long dispelled over six decades ago.
The historian went further by contesting the legitimacy of Algeria’s borders, particularly in the western regions, implying a connection to Moroccan territories. This narrative challenges the sovereignty of Algeria over areas like Tediklet, Gourara, Tindouf, and Colombes Béchar, sparking concerns about the intent behind such historical reinterpretations.
This isn’t the first time such controversial claims have been made. Last year, the Moroccan newspaper “Maroc Hebdo” published a map that excluded parts of Algeria, attaching them to the Kingdom of Morocco. The incident provoked a fiery response from Algerian authorities, who condemned the act as reflecting Morocco’s expansionist ambitions.
Algeria has consistently responded to such provocations with firm statements and, in some instances, sanctions. The recent decision by major international shipping companies, including the Danish company “Meserk” and the French “CMA CGM,” to suspend container ship passages through the Moroccan port of Tangier is seen as a manifestation of Algeria’s deterrent policy against repeated provocations by the Moroccan regime.
Algeria, known for responding decisively to perceived provocations, remains committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and historical narrative.
