Algiers, April 26, 2024 – Algeria has been appointed as the President of the Board of Directors of the EMS Cooperative of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), during the General Assembly of this cooperative held last April in Berne, Switzerland, announced a statement from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications on Thursday.

“Following the General Assembly of the EMS Cooperative of the Universal Postal Union, held last April in Berne, Switzerland, the representative of Algeria, Mr. Nabil Bensissaid, Director General of EMS Champion Post Algeria, was unanimously appointed as the new President of the Board of Directors of the EMS Cooperative of the UPU,” the statement said.

This body includes representatives from Japan, China, the United States, Singapore, Canada, Romania, the Netherlands, and Senegal.

The representative of Algeria had previously been elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the EMS Cooperative, becoming the first representative from an Arab country on this board.

In his role as President of the Board of Directors of the EMS Cooperative of the UPU, the representative of Algeria will be “responsible for defining and managing the cooperative’s strategic program in line with the economic requirements of member countries, as well as accelerating growth in other economic areas through digital express mail platforms.”

The UPU is the second oldest global organization under the United Nations. Its cooperative specializing in express mail comprises 175 countries, the statement reminds.

Algeria’s appointment to lead the EMS Cooperative signifies not only recognition of its role in the global postal network but also an opportunity to contribute significantly to the modernization and enhancement of international postal services, thereby benefiting member countries worldwide.
