Algiers, Algeria | August 31st, 2024 — Algeria has officially become a member of the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), a significant milestone that underscores the country’s strategic integration into global financial systems. The announcement was made on Saturday, August 31, by Dilma Rousseff, President of the NDB, during the bank’s ninth annual meeting, signaling Algeria’s growing influence and commitment to fostering multilateral development.

“We have a process in place to admit new members to the bank… Algeria has been granted membership,” Rousseff stated to reporters, as reported by Reuters. This inclusion positions Algeria within a pivotal financial institution established by the BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—in 2015, aiming to redefine global financial governance through innovative, development-focused investments.

Algeria’s journey to NDB membership began with an official request, accompanied by an initial contribution of $1.5 billion.
