Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — Algeria has officially closed the door on its bid for membership in the BRICS group, despite its status as a member of the BRICS Bank, according to a report from El Moudjahid citing a well-informed government source. This statement follows speculation that member countries of BRICS had reached out to Algeria once more regarding its potential inclusion in the group.

El Moudjahid notes that the authorities in Algeria consider the issue of BRICS membership settled, asserting that “Algeria has definitively turned the page” on this matter, even while maintaining its membership in the BRICS Bank. The source emphasized that Algeria’s disengagement from BRICS stems from “simple and logical reasons,” especially following its exclusion from the August 2023 Johannesburg summit, where six new members were welcomed without sufficient justification for Algeria’s omission.

The editorial pointed out that the decision to exclude Algeria was made unexpectedly at the last moment, highlighting a “flagrant inconsistency” in both the rationale and process behind the decision. El Moudjahid criticized the BRICS organization for its failure to adopt a more inclusive approach, arguing that the group, which claims to challenge the established global order represented by the IMF and World Bank, has instead engaged in “absurd selection logic” that limits its impact and scope.

El Moudjahid underscored Algeria’s strong economic standing, noting that the country has no external debt, possesses the largest land area in Africa, and is rich in mineral and energy resources, complemented by infrastructure admired across the continent. The report also emphasized that the BRICS group, which aims to present itself as a global economic alternative, has chosen to ignore the positive economic assessments of Algeria from both the IMF and the World Bank.

The exclusion of Algeria is suggested to result more from political maneuvers than from economic criteria, with reports indicating that a member country exercised its veto under the influence of a Gulf emirate.

Despite these developments, El Moudjahid reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to advocating for multipolarity in international relations and restoring multilateral cooperation. The country plans to continue defending its interests alongside its BRICS allies in various other frameworks, such as the UN Security Council, the Group of 77, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
