Algeria Poised to Seal Agreement with Russian Energy Giant Gazprom for Southern Gas Field Development

Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — Algeria is on the verge of finalizing an agreement with the Russian energy behemoth Gazprom, marking a significant step forward in the development of a major gas field located in the southern region of the country. Rachid Nadil, President of Algeria’s Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH), disclosed this during an exclusive interview with Russia Today (RT), held on the sidelines of the prestigious Russian Energy Week forum in Moscow.

Nadil’s announcement signals a potential turning point in Algeria’s energy strategy, as the country seeks to solidify its position as a key player in the global gas market. He emphasized that negotiations with Gazprom, Russia’s largest energy corporation, are nearing completion, and an agreement could be inked imminently. “We have been in negotiations for some time, and today, we are at the development stage. All that remains is the formal signing of the contract, after which we can proceed with the extraction of gas,” Nadil stated.

The collaboration with Gazprom, a titan in the global energy landscape, comes at a crucial time for Algeria, which is looking to expand its production capabilities and diversify its technological partnerships in the hydrocarbon sector. The project is expected to inject new momentum into Algeria’s already robust gas industry, positioning the country to meet both domestic energy needs and the growing demand for gas exports, particularly from Europe, which has been actively seeking alternative energy sources amid global market disruptions.

Russian Technology at the Forefront

Nadil highlighted the extensive use of Russian equipment in Algeria’s petroleum installations, underscoring the deepening technological ties between the two countries. “We are already employing a significant amount of Russian technology in our oil facilities and are in close collaboration with the Russian Institute of Technological Initiatives for Oil and Gas. We are now nearly fully aligned with Russian standards and norms, which will facilitate the importation of additional equipment required for this project,” Nadil explained.

While specific details about the location and scale of the gas field were not disclosed, Nadil stressed the significance of the site, noting that Gazprom’s decision to invest in its development underscores its potential.
