Algeria-Portugal: Convergence of views, attachment to Treaty of Friendship

ALGIERS– President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness, and Cooperation signed with Portugal in 2005 during his visit to Lisbon on Tuesday.
In a joint statement with his Portuguese counterpart, President Tebboune expressed his satisfaction with the fruitful, frank, and sincere discussions that took place between the two leaders.
He emphasized the importance of regular consultation between the two countries, which reflects the multifaceted partnership established between them in a complex regional and international environment.
President Tebboune also extended his warm congratulations to President de Sousa and the Portuguese people on the occasion of their national holiday, Portugal Day, which will be celebrated on June 10.
Additionally, he highlighted the upcoming 210th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the Regency of Algiers and the Kingdom of Portugal on June 14, which gave birth to dense and multidimensional relationships between the two nations.
Convergence of views between Algeria and Portugal on regional and international issues
During the meeting between President Tebboune of Algeria and Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal, the two leaders engaged in fruitful, frank, and sincere discussions that highlighted the strong relationship between their countries.
They noted a total convergence of views on all regional and international issues, including the situations in Libya, Mali, the Sahel, Western Sahara, and the Palestinian cause, as well as the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria and Portugal share a common desire for peace between Russia and Ukraine, as well as a commitment to resolving the question of Western Sahara in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations and the Council of Security.
In addition, he reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution and the establishment of the State of Palestine on the borders of June 1967, with eastern El-Quds as its capital.
Overall, the meeting between President Tebboune and Mr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa demonstrated the strong alignment between Algeria and Portugal on critical regional and international issues.
