ALGIERS- A crucial milestone in the integrated phosphate mega-project has been achieved with the construction of the mineral quay at the port of Annaba, exclusively dedicated to exporting phosphate and phosphatic products. The project has been entrusted to an Algerian-Chinese consortium comprising China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), Cosider-TP, and the Mediterranean Economic Public Company for Maritime Works (Meditram).
According to Mohamed Mahdi Younsi, project director at the National Agency for the Realization of Port Infrastructure (Anrip), preparatory operations for the project have commenced to ensure its timely completion. This strategic endeavor is part of the larger integrated phosphate mega-project in Tébessa, aimed at producing over 10 million tons of phosphate ore and 6 million tons of fertilizer.
The project involves constructing a 1600-meter quay within 24 months to enhance the port’s capacity to accommodate large vessels and facilitate the handling and transportation of phosphate and phosphatic products, with an investment of 89 billion dinars. Annaba’s port infrastructure will play a pivotal role in receiving production from various processing units.
Under the directives of the President, there has been significant pressure to expedite the project’s completion, emphasizing its urgency and strategic importance. Earlier this year, the project was awarded to the Chinese consortium through direct negotiation due to its urgent and strategic nature. It forms part of the integrated phosphate mega-project spanning four eastern provinces: Tébessa, Souk Ahras, Skikda, and Annaba, aiming to diversify and promote non-hydrocarbon exports.
In addition to the Annaba port expansion, substantial progress has been made in constructing railway lines to transport 10 million tons of phosphate ore to processing and transformation units. The National Agency for the Study and Monitoring of Railway Investment Projects (Anesrif) reports significant advancements in modernizing and duplicating the eastern mining line, covering 382 kilometers. Projects from Djebel Onk to Oued Kebrit, Bouchegouf to Annaba, and Bouchgouf to Oued Kebrit are progressing well, along with the modernization of the Skikda-Annaba line.
The completion of these projects is crucial for Algeria’s economy as it seeks to reduce its reliance on hydrocarbons. The export of phosphate products presents a significant opportunity, especially with the estimated production capacity of 5.4 million tons per year, positioning Algeria as a major player in the global phosphate market.
