ALGIERS- The National Commission for the Observation of the Lunar Crescent announced this evening that Monday, March 11, will mark the first day of Ramadan in Algeria.
Just a few hours earlier, several countries had also confirmed the start of fasting for the following day. These included Saudi Arabia, Qatar, France, and Germany.
The announcement comes following the traditional sighting of the new moon, which signals the start of the holy month of Ramadan. It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community for Muslims worldwide.
With the confirmation of the start of Ramadan, Algerians are preparing to observe the month-long fast, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset each day. Ramadan holds significant spiritual importance for Muslims, offering an opportunity for increased devotion, self-discipline, and acts of charity.
As the crescent moon is sighted, mosques across Algeria will witness increased attendance for Taraweeh prayers, special nightly prayers performed during Ramadan. Families will gather for Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins, and Iftar, the meal to break the fast at sunset.
