Algiers, Algeria | February 9th, 2025 — Algeria has retained its position as the third-largest holder of gold reserves among Arab nations, according to the latest report issued by the World Gold Council. This reaffirmation of Algeria’s standing highlights the nation’s strategic approach to safeguarding economic stability through precious metal reserves, particularly amid global financial volatility.

Algeria’s Robust Gold Holdings

The report indicates that Algeria’s gold reserves remain substantial, standing at 173.6 metric tons, solidifying its place behind Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, which hold 323.1 metric tons and 286.8 metric tons, respectively. This ranking underscores Algeria’s long-standing policy of maintaining a significant stockpile of the precious metal, ensuring financial resilience in an era of heightened economic unpredictability.

Iraq follows in fourth place, while Libya, Egypt, and Qatar also feature prominently on the list, with reserves of 146.7 metric tons, 162.7 metric tons, and 110.8 metric tons, respectively. These figures reflect a broader trend among Arab nations that continue to prioritize gold as a key component of their monetary strategies.

Gold as a Safe Haven Amid Dollar Fluctuations

Gold remains one of the most sought-after safe-haven assets for both investors and governments, particularly in light of the turbulence affecting the U.S. dollar in recent years. With mounting concerns over inflation, geopolitical tensions, and shifts in global economic power, many governments have ramped up gold purchases to fortify their reserves.

Notably, economic powerhouses like China and Russia have significantly increased their gold acquisitions, a move that has contributed to the surge in global gold prices. The price of gold has now reached a record $2,887.6 per ounce, reflecting the heightened demand driven by fears of economic instability and the pursuit of alternative financial safeguards.
