Algiers, Algeria | January 15th, 2025 — On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Algeria’s State Secretary to the Minister of Energy for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassaa, participated in the virtual African Energy Ministers’ Meeting, held under the invitation of South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa. The high-level meeting aimed to reinforce collaboration among African nations in the energy sector, with South Africa leveraging its presidency of the G20 to advocate for Africa’s energy priorities on the global stage.
During the discussions, Minister Ramokgopa underscored the importance of incorporating Africa’s energy challenges into the agenda of the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled for November 2025, aligning with South Africa’s central theme of “Promoting Solidarity, Equity, and Sustainable Development.” The meeting highlighted critical energy priorities for the continent, including ensuring energy security through affordable and reliable access to electricity for all Africans, advancing a just and inclusive energy transition, and strengthening the interconnected African energy grid. The goal of the grid initiative is to foster deeper regional cooperation, creating a unified energy network capable of improving electricity access across the continent.
State Secretary Noureddine Yassaa delivered a powerful intervention, reiterating Algeria’s unwavering commitment to advancing energy cooperation within Africa. He emphasized the need for enhanced energy partnerships among African nations and cited landmark projects like the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) and the strategic electricity interconnection project linking Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya as pivotal initiatives for regional energy security and economic integration.
Yassaa also highlighted Algeria’s advocacy for natural gas as a transitional energy source that can facilitate a fair and balanced energy shift while promoting long-term sustainability. Stressing the importance of equitable energy access, he reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to supporting renewable energy ventures aligned with both developmental and environmental objectives across the continent. He further called for the responsible and sustainable exploitation of Africa’s abundant strategic mineral resources, which are crucial for modern energy technologies and sustainable development.
The meeting also addressed global challenges requiring collective action, notably climate change and economic inflation, while exploring strategies to enhance financial support for green energy transitions. The focus remained on securing adequate funding for sustainable energy initiatives and empowering African nations to harness their renewable potential for greater prosperity.
This strategic dialogue forms part of Africa’s broader preparations for the 2025 G20 Summit, where the continent aims to spotlight its energy needs and sustainable development goals on the global stage. Algeria’s active participation reflects its leadership in championing regional energy cooperation and its vision for a greener, more resilient Africa driven by shared prosperity and sustainability.
