Algiers, Algeria | November 06th, 2024 — Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, underscored Algeria’s firm commitment to a sustainable energy transition at the inaugural ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG), held in Rome. Hosted under the patronage of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, this landmark event convened international leaders, experts, and policymakers to advance fusion energy as a sustainable energy solution.
During the meeting, Minister Arkab highlighted Algeria’s ambition to host a fusion energy pilot project, with a view to positioning the country as a significant player in advancing this technology. He also emphasized Algeria’s dedication to diversifying its energy sources, committing to clean and renewable energy alternatives such as hydrogen and solar power, which the country aims to expand significantly in the coming years. Fusion energy, Arkab noted, represents an innovative, low-carbon solution with enormous potential to provide sustainable energy for humanity.
Arkab addressed recent scientific breakthroughs in nuclear fusion, stressing the importance of international cooperation to overcome the technical challenges inherent in fusion technology. He noted that fusion energy offers a promising, carbon-free alternative to fossil fuels, with reliable and safe energy production capacities that could substantially contribute to global efforts in diversifying energy sources and mitigating environmental impacts.
Arkab further noted that Africa represents a promising region for deploying such innovative energy solutions, particularly in areas with limited energy access. He reaffirmed Algeria’s support for IAEA initiatives aimed at fostering technical cooperation and facilitating global scientific exchange in this domain.
The ministerial meeting laid the groundwork for a shared vision to support the development of nuclear fusion energy globally. Algeria, Arkab emphasized, believes that collective commitment and robust international partnerships are crucial to meeting global energy demands, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring a sustainable energy future for generations to come. Minister Arkab, joined by Algerian Ambassador to Italy Mohamed Khelifi, Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal, and Nuclear Energy Commissioner Abdelhamid Mellah, reinforced Algeria’s resolve to work alongside international partners to achieve a universally beneficial fusion energy future.
This event marked a pivotal step in global efforts to establish fusion energy as an enduring and innovative solution to current energy and climate challenges.
