Algiers, Algeria | January 03rd, 2024 — Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to counterterrorism efforts across Africa, declaring it a “top priority” during a press conference in New York on Thursday. His remarks came in response to a question from Algeria Press Service (APS) regarding Algeria’s stance on combating terrorism on the continent.

“Algeria, as an African nation, stands in full solidarity with its brotherly countries across the continent and remains committed to sharing its extensive experience in counterterrorism,” Bendjama emphasized while addressing the media on Algeria’s January presidency of the UN Security Council.

He recalled Algeria’s successful eradication of terrorism within its own borders, stressing that while Algeria overcame this threat, it continues to persist in other regions. Bendjama highlighted Algeria’s readiness to assist fellow African nations in confronting this challenge, while fully respecting the sovereignty and specific circumstances of each country.

The ambassador underscored Algeria’s prominent role in the African Union’s counterterrorism strategy, recalling that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune serves as the AU’s Coordinator for the Fight Against Terrorism and Violent Extremism.

“Algeria will humbly, yet resolutely, place its expertise at the disposal of friendly nations, particularly within Africa, to strengthen the continent’s collective security,” Bendjama asserted.

Beyond counterterrorism, the veteran diplomat addressed other pressing international issues, including the ongoing crises in Libya and the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the ongoing aggression in Gaza. He warned of the critical challenges facing the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) under mounting threats.

The Western Sahara cause was also a focal point in his address, with Bendjama reiterating Algeria’s steadfast support for the decolonization process. He described the issue as a matter of unfinished decolonization that holds equal priority for Algeria, the African Union, and the United Nations.

Bendjama’s statements underscored Algeria’s consistent foreign policy approach: defending international law, supporting oppressed nations, and advocating for global peace and stability through multilateral cooperation.
