Algeria Reaffirms Dedication to Global Nuclear Non-Proliferation through NPT Universalization

Algiers, Algeria | July 25th, 2024 — Algeria has reinforced its commitment to the global eradication of nuclear weapons through the universalization of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the rigorous implementation of its principles.

During the general debate session of the second preparatory committee for the 2026 NPT Review Conference, Rachid Bladehane, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, underscored Algeria’s alignment with the positions articulated by the Non-Aligned Movement, the African Group, and the Arab Group.

Bladehane lauded the NPT as the “cornerstone” of the global disarmament and non-proliferation framework. He articulated Algeria’s steadfast support for the treaty, asserting that the elimination of nuclear weapons hinges critically on the treaty’s universal adherence and the effective implementation of its three fundamental pillars: nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Bladehane also highlighted the importance of all states acceding to and adhering to the treaty, and honoring the resolutions of previous review conferences, such as the 1995 decision on extending the NPT and establishing a weapons of mass destruction-free zone in the Middle East.

Bladehane commended Algeria’s active role in disarmament efforts, reflecting its dedication to enhancing global security and peace. He reiterated Algeria’s belief in the paramount importance of nuclear disarmament, aiming for the complete and irreversible elimination of nuclear weapons, which he described as the most significant threat to humanity and the environment.

He pointed out Algeria’s prompt endorsement of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and welcomed its entry into force in 2021. The diplomat stressed that addressing the risks posed by nuclear weapons and their proliferation necessitates their total eradication, particularly in light of the severe humanitarian and environmental impacts of past nuclear tests conducted on Algerian soil.
