Algiers, Algeria | May 23, 2024 — Algeria’s Minister of Hydraulics, Taha Derbal, met with the President of the World Water Council, Loïc Fauchon, on Wednesday in Bali, Indonesia, to discuss Algeria’s approach to water resource management. The meeting took place during Fauchon’s visit to the Algerian stand at the 10th World Water Forum exhibition, accompanied by Indonesia’s Minister of Public Works and Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono.
Algeria’s Water Management Strategy
During the discussion, Minister Derbal outlined Algeria’s projects aimed at addressing water stress issues. He highlighted the national water strategy for 2030, initiated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which includes extensive desalination projects to ensure water access for all citizens across the country. This strategy is a critical component of Algeria’s efforts to manage its water resources effectively amid increasing demand and climate challenges.
Sovereignty Over Transboundary Groundwater
A significant topic of the meeting was the management of transboundary groundwater resources. Minister Derbal emphasized Algeria’s commitment to the principle of state sovereignty over its groundwater. He also recalled the tripartite agreement with Tunisia and Libya, known as the North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS), which aims to manage shared groundwater resources estimated at over 50,000 billion cubic meters. This agreement underscores Algeria’s proactive role in regional water cooperation and sustainable management practices.
Bilateral Relations with Indonesia
In a separate meeting, Minister Derbal and Indonesia’s Minister Hadimuljono discussed bilateral relations and opportunities to strengthen cooperation, particularly in water management. They exchanged views on projects addressing water scarcity, such as seawater desalination and the reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture.
Minister Derbal presented Algeria’s experience and initiatives in water management, stressing the importance of environmental respect in water-related projects. He highlighted the Saoura region in southwestern Algeria, which faces drying issues due to over-exploitation of water resources caused by projects in neighboring countries.
Minister Hadimuljono expressed admiration for Algeria’s efforts in ensuring water security and expressed interest in Algeria’s expertise, particularly in desalination. Given Indonesia’s archipelagic nature and water scarcity challenges, learning from Algeria’s successful strategies is seen as beneficial.
The meetings in Bali highlighted Algeria’s proactive stance on managing its water resources and reaffirming its sovereignty over groundwater. The discussions also paved the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation with Indonesia, sharing valuable insights and experiences in tackling water scarcity. The collaborative spirit embodied in these discussions aligns with global efforts to ensure sustainable water management and address the critical issue of water security.
