Algiers, Algeria | July 12th, 2024 — Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Amar Bendjama, delivered a resolute statement reaffirming Algeria’s staunch support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) during a critical donor pledging conference on Friday. Mr. Bendjama emphasized the urgency of the meeting against the backdrop of intensified aggression targeting the Palestinian people.
Describing the current situation as a humanitarian catastrophe exacerbated by widespread famine in Gaza, Mr. Bendjama stressed the pivotal role of UNRWA as a cornerstone of humanitarian action in the region. Highlighting Algeria’s active role within the “+Shared Commitments on UNRWA+” initiative alongside Jordan, Kuwait, and Slovenia, Mr. Bendjama underscored the agency’s mandate derived from UN General Assembly resolutions, reflecting international consensus. He firmly rejected any attempts to diminish UNRWA’s legitimacy, asserting that no other UN agency or NGO could adequately replace its vital services on the ground.
Addressing UNRWA’s chronic financial challenges, Mr. Bendjama acknowledged Algeria’s recent commitment of $15 million in response to the UN Secretary-General’s appeal, aimed at ensuring the agency’s operational continuity amid donor funding shortfalls. He urged collective reflection on establishing a more stable and sustainable financial model for UNRWA to navigate ongoing uncertainties effectively.
In conclusion, Mr. Bendjama reiterated Algeria’s unwavering solidarity with UNRWA and called upon all international partners to uphold their commitments to support the agency’s crucial humanitarian efforts.
