Algiers- Algeria, May 16, 2024 – In a notable move led by Algeria, the United Nations Security Council has called for an independent investigation into the mass graves in Gaza, signaling a shift in attention to Palestine, where widespread human rights violations persist.
During Tuesday’s session of the UN Security Council dedicated to human rights violations, particularly in Libya, Algeria advocated for Palestine to be included on the agenda, citing evident crimes against humanity in the region.
While the session primarily centered on Libya, where the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General recently resigned due to stalled progress, Algeria highlighted human rights abuses outlined in the report, stressing its condemnation of all crimes, irrespective of the perpetrator or victim.
Algeria underscored the principle of non-impunity as fundamental, urging the international community and the International Criminal Court (ICC) to address crimes worldwide.
Expressing a desire to see support for the ICC’s work extended to other issues, Algeria called attention to violations in the occupied Palestinian territories and the mass graves in Gaza, emphasizing the necessity for criminal proceedings to be shielded from political influence.
The Algerian delegation at the UN emphasized that the issue raised is based on evidence and should not be politicized to ensure its success. Algeria urged for criminal procedures to be conducted free from political interference.
Algeria is expected to show support for these issues and hopes that the ICC will broaden its focus, despite facing criticism for its investigations into complaints related to Zionist occupation crimes. Algeria calls for equal seriousness in addressing violations in the occupied Palestinian territories and the mass graves in Gaza.
Moreover, Algeria exerted pressure on the ICC, stating that it is imperative for the court to demonstrate that it is not a tool manipulated by certain members of the international community to target individuals at will.
Regarding the situation in Libya, Algeria reiterated that support for stability and an inclusive political solution is essential for ensuring justice and the rule of law.
Given the political deadlock in Libya, the Algerian mission urged collective responsibility from all members of the international community, highlighting that the continued circulation of arms involving several countries perpetuates the crisis and fuels violence across the country.
